fish & seafood has more than doubled. Natural resources for capture fisheries are limited and already over-exploited.

Aquaculture as an alternative and relatively new industry has experienced a tremendous growth and today provides almost one third of total production of fish and seafood.

Aquaculture today faces numerous challenges. Being the fastest growing sector of the world food economy, the industry is expanding rapidly all over the world.

This growth is often accompanied by detrimental production practises negatively affecting the natural environment and local communities.
